The announcement at the lunch by chairman Graeme Smith, which was held at The Tower Hotel in London, followed a number of high profile liquidations in the industry, and is aimed at helping to avoid similar situations in the future. Graeme also detailed upcoming research by the association, including being part of a pan-European project, supplier mystery shopping, and more end user activity. For more information on the new standard, turn to Business News on page 21. Two awards were presented at the event: the Richard Dyson award sponsored by the Briman Group for the most active distributor in promoting UK manufacturers was won by Jamie Marshall from Premier Print & Promotions; while the Victor Rosewell’s Sword of Honour, which is given to an individual who has given considerable support to the association, was awarded to Matt Franks, CEO of Fluid Branding, and past chair, president and director of the BPMA. Matt will now become a fellow of the BPMA. The lunch also raised more than £1,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society. www.bpma.co.uk The BPMA held its popular Christmas Lunch at The Tower Hotel in London Images columnist expands business The new year got off to a cracking start for Adrian Burton, Images columnist and managing director of South East Workwear in Abingdon, Oxford, with the expansion of his shop’s production area. The production unit, housed next to the 1,000 sq ft retail shop, has been knocked through into a shop on its other side, creating an impressive, light and airy 1,400 sq ft production area. “We really needed the space due to the demand for embroidery and printing,” explained Adrian. “I think having the DTGs has made us much more competitive and has opened up doors to new customers.” While he’s not taking on any additional machinery at the moment, he is considering changing the embroidery machines from SWF machines to Tajima models. www.seworkwear.com Plastindia Foundation makes the world’s largest T-shirt from recycled plastic The Plastindia Foundation entered the Guinness World Records in January 2018 when it created the world’s biggest T-shirt out of 100% recycled plastic. The fabric used to make the 69.77m by 96.86m tee was created from plastic waste from the equivalent of 200,000 PET bottles. Plastindia Foundation, which represents the plastics industry in India, took on the challenge to raise awareness of the need to manage plastics waste so that it is recycled more efficiently. The Foundation reported that the fabric will now be used to create 10,000 T-shirts, which will be distributed for free to children housed by NGOs across the country. www.plastindia.org South East Workwear expanded its production area for January 2018
