Phil Millar, managing director at Creative Apparel, discusses setting fire to T-shirts, talking over people and his life as a DJ UPCLOSE AND PERSONAL What‘s your guilty pleasure? Reading Images magazine during work time. What‘s your hidden talent? I used to be a DJ. If you could have anybody else’s job, whose would you want? John D Rockefeller’s [the business magnate]. What is the best place you‘ve ever visited? I’ve been to quite a few places, but the Maldives is one of the nicest. Which gadget or app could you not live without? Spotify or Audible If you could ask one person (living or dead) one question, what would you ask? My one question would be to ask Howard Hughes [another US business magnate] if I could spend an evening with him and then I would be able to ask him everything I could in that time. How long have you been working in the industry? I have been working in the industry for 30 years – since 08/08/1988. What‘s the best thing that has happened to you at work? Moving the company into a 24-hour operation – making money whilst I sleep! What tune can‘t you get out of your head at the moment? Marvin Gaye’s Inner City Blues. What‘s your favourite TV show? Suits and Dallas. Phil, aka Jason Donovan, with the football team the company sponsored in the early days. What is the most embarrassing thing that‘s ever happened to you at work? When I first set up the company, I brought some new customers round to show them what we were all about and what we could do. We had a couple of staff hand printing and putting T-shirts through the dryer, however unbeknown to us, the dryer was faulty and set some T-shirts on fire just as I was passing through the department with my new customers. It wasn’t quite the show- round I had planned. What’s your most unappealing habit? I talk over people and have a tendency to interrupt them when in full flow or finish their sentences.
