Hardened Brexiteers are confident that this is the best possible outcome for the UK and its economy, yet even they would accept that such a scenario has the potential to affect the supply of imported goods from the EU, in the short term at least. With that in mind, we contacted a cross-section of the industry’s suppliers to find out how they’ve been preparing for ‘no deal’ to ensure it’s business as usual for the UK’s garment decorators from 30 March (see page 20). Fast fashion came under the government’s microscope again last month with the publication by the Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) of the new Fixing fashion: clothing consumption and sustainability report. The report addresses the environmental and social cost of our clothes and calls for “the end of the era of throwaway fashion”. It includes a number of recommendations, including one that producers are charged a penny per garment to raise £35 million to invest in better clothing collection and sorting in the UK. You can read our own report on what Mary Creagh, Labour MP and chair of the EAC, had to say on this topic at the Pure London show in February, on page 16 and online at images- magazine.com. One of the biggest challenges facing garment decoration businesses in 2019 is finding skilled workers. In his column this month, Marshall Atkinson grabs this issue by the horns with some practical advice on how to find – and retain – members of staff. If this is something your business is struggling with, turn to page 36 to check out Marshall’s top recruitment tips. It may be that you don’t need to look too far to find your new star employee (or even your new business partner): many small businesses like to keep recruitment close to home by employing members of their immediate family. There are many advantages to running a family business...and just as many pitfalls. Michael Best addresses the pros and cons of working with family members and advises on how to manage matters, on both a business and personal level, on page 48. Schoolwear manufacturer William Turner celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2019 and we took the opportunity to talk to managing director, Daniel Turner, about the company’s history and its emphasis on continuous innovation. You can read our brand profile on page 44. Finally, don’t forget to enter this month’s Just Cool competition – see the competition postcard that came with your copy of Images for further details. Good luck! Jonathan Vince No deal and fast fashion
