Together with Aeoon’s Kyo series, the new Kornit and Roq industrial printers have been developed to go toe-to-toe with screen printing on low and medium runs, and give print shops a fully digital alternative to traditional analogue garment printing processes. However, screen printing certainly isn’t going away: indeed, in an interesting twist it is taking the game back to DTG with a new generation of ‘artisan’ printers returning to hands-on manual screen printing. M&R’s new and affordable Genesis press, which we feature in our screen printing showcase (beginning on page 70) answers directly to these garment decorators’ needs. Ahead of International Women’s Day 2019 (8 March) we showcase the latest womenswear styles (page 59) and talk to Shanne Pritchard, AS Colour’s product designer, about current trends in brandable women’s garments. We also delve behind the headlines of the controversy surrounding the #IWannaBeASpiceGirl Comic Relief T-shirts, which were specially designed to help champion ‘gender justice’ and equality for women and girls. The Guardian newspaper reported that workers in the Bangladeshi factory that manufactured the Stanley/Stella shirts used for the charity project were paid 35p an hour and subjected to verbal abuse and forced overtime. We spoke with Stanley/Stella’s sustainability manager, Bruno Van Sieleghem, to get the brand’s response and perspective, and address the complex issues involved.
