W ell... It was exciting while it lasted: the sunshine and the semi-final. But did the World Cup feelgood factor feel good enough for long enough to impact your order books? The England team may have fallen short in its attempt to secure football’s biggest prize, but did it do enough to bring at least some promo and merchandise orders home? Did the team’s extended stay in the competition result in an upturn in decorated garment orders for your business? Likewise, the heatwave: while the World Cup is already ‘so last month’, the sunshine seems intent on sticking around; has it brought a warm glow to your projected revenues for this season? How are sales compared with summer 2017? Unexpectedly high temperatures won’t be affecting sales of embroidered clothing for Kerri Jamieson, owner of Warrah Workshop. Located in South Harbour, West Falkland (the second largest island in the Falkland Islands, where the temperature was 1°C at the time of writing), Warrah Workshop is 180 miles from the nearest paved road and “probably the most remote embroidery business in the world”. We conducted a long-distance interview with Kerri to find out how she manages to run a business that is entirely off-grid and which ships its orders via the Falkland Islands Government Air Service! Suffice to say, Kerri and her husband Brian face a number of challenges that a UK embroidery company based on an edge-of-town industrial estate couldn’t begin to imagine. Turn to page 26 to find out how the couple operate: as Kerri says, “necessity is the mother of invention”. Ink manufacturer Virus Inks is based much closer to home – north west Italy to be precise. We never fail to be impressed by the prints Virus produces, so we asked it to provide a step-by-step technique guide to adding value to fashion- oriented prints. The company responded with a stunning flock design along with a detailed explanation of the relatively simple process required to produce it. You’ll find all the details in ‘Are you ready to flock?’ (page 36). Speaking of fashion, our annual Fashion & Streetwear showcase (page 58) brings the catwalk to you and is packed with new on-trend styles, ranging from glitter-peaked caps through denim bags and shirts to longline tees, slim-fit sweat pants, camo hoodies and authentic biker jackets. We also get top tips on how to profit from streetwear from Kieran Murphy, Ralawise’s head of marketing, (page 68) and find out from Tim Bickley how Awesome Merchandise helped him to set up his successful streetwear label, Rainy Daze (page 69). If you’re servicing the streetwear sector and want to take your product and service offering to the next level then don’t miss our profile of UKP Accessories in which the company explains how to add value to garments and accessories with bespoke finishing touches (page 24). Erich Campbell’s expert advice on how to create a successful pre-order marketing event for independent fashion brands, (as well as fan clubs, schools and small business) is another must-read (page 29).
