He explains that the phrase ‘invisible backing’ is used to describe embroidery backings that cannot be seen after the embroidery has been completed and the backing removed. There are two ranges of invisible backings, the first of which are those that can be removed to leave a clean, fibre-free edge. ETC Supplies offers its Multi-Tear Backing in 40g or 50g weight. This is a paper-like, non-woven material that can be torn in any direction, is available in white and black, and can be purchased on the roll or in any size pre-cut pieces. Also included in this range is the Super Easy Tear Backing. “This material is unique to ETC Supplies and not available anywhere else,” explains Jas. “Unlike other embroidery backings that are held together using a binder, this material is bonded by a heat- welding process. This produces a very strong backing, ideal for use in polo shirts and T-shirts, and can be easily removed without any fibrous edges.” The second type of invisible backings are those that can be removed by use of water or heat – that is, water-soluble films in various weights, with or without a water-soluble adhesive coating; water-soluble non-woven fabrics, with or without a water-soluble adhesive coating; and heat-soluble clear films. Additionally, ETC Supplies developed a special backing called Skin Soft after being approached 15 years ago by a high street store chain about embroidery rubbing on children’s skin.
