Mind, the mental health charity, suggests that one in six workers is currently dealing with a mental health problem, such as anxiety, depression or stress, which not only affects their wellbeing but also impacts on their performance and productivity. For any business owner or manager, fostering a happy and healthy workplace and effectively managing and supporting your staff’s mental health is not only in the best interests of your employees, it is also in the best interests of your business as a whole. We are marking W orld Mental Health Day (10 October) by publishing some practical pointers on how to maintain a healthy workforce from Laura Johnson, head of workplace wellbeing programmes at Mind (page 24), while Marshall Atkinson focuses on the causes (and prevention) of stress in the print shop, as he sharpens his stake, peels his garlic and prepares to help you ‘Slay your energy vampire’ (page 48). Talking of vampires, Halloween is fast approaching and we’re getting into the spirit (sic) of things with the help of Grafityp UK’s Sue Kirkwood, who demonstrates how to combine different types of heat transfer vinyl to create a spooky glow-in-the-dark T-shirt design in this issue’s step-by-step feature (‘Vinyl combos’, page 68). Suitably inspired, you can catch up on all the latest developments in heat- applied decoration equipment and consumables in ‘Film stars’, our annual heat transfers and vinyls showcase (page 71). Meanwhile, screen printing expert Tony Palmer goes all Harrison Ford on us as he presents a primer on squeegees in ‘Blade rubber’ (page 40), while embroidery guru Erich Campbell rolls up his sleeves and grapples with large and complicated pieces of embroidery work in ‘How to digitise daunting designs’ (page 51). Embroidery designs don’t come much more complex than Laura Marriott’s stunning RiverFleur piece – see how it was created in this month’s ‘Anatomy of an embroidery’ (page 36) And digital print shops needn’t feel left out, as Colin Marsh of Resolute DTG is on hand to explain the differences between piezo print heads and advise on which type would best suit your production requirements (‘DTG helpdesk’, page 26).
