If you haven’t started to address these questions yet, then Carl Reader – small business expert and chairman at D&T Chartered Accountants – shares his top tips on ‘How to improve the health of your business in 2020’, on page 22. If you like Carl’s idea of shaking things up, then this year’s What’s New and Supplier Focus feature is the place to start: you’ll find an entire section studded with new products that could transform your business – whether it’s fashionable and/or sustainable garments and accessories with the potential to open up new sales opportunities, or the latest embroidery and printing equipment that could help you to nail your new productivity targets. The What’s New and Supplier Focus section starts on page 41: get inspired! Tony Palmer argues that the current generation of computer-to-screen (CTS) equipment has the potential to bring just such a productivity (and quality) boost to your screen print shop in 2020. He explains how in ‘Screen savers’ (page 102). In his advice piece, Carl Reader suggests that it’s important for business people to find ways to reward themselves. We took his advice on board and decided to reward ourselves with a new year ‘feast of caviar’. You can join us as we indulge in this issue’s blinging step-by-step, courtesy of Kieth Stevens of International Coatings, which shows how to use gel ink and caviar beads to add glitz and glamour to any print. Check out ‘Bling it on!’ (page 105) to see how it’s done. Pricing is often a fraught topic for many businesses, so could 2020 be the year you switch to a new, non-stitch count embroidery pricing model? Erich Campbell shares his thoughts and advice in ‘The quoting queue’ (page 108). Fast becoming an annual Images institution, Marshall Atkinson marks the start of the year with his now familar crystal ball gazing, predicting what the next 12 months (and, indeed, ten years) have in store for garment decoration businesses. See ‘20/20 vision’ (page 110). Carl Reader also reminds us that we “work to live, not live to work” and suggests that a good new resolution for the decade ahead would be to “make work fun”. That sounds like a particularly good piece of advice, especially in these somewhat uncertain times. So what are your aims, plans and resolutions for the ‘20s? And where do you want your business to be come 31 December 2029? Jonathan Vince New decade’s resolutions
