As we were preparing our March issue the Bank of England reported that the UK economy was on the up; house prices and sales were increasing, and in our report on China and the novel coronavirus, the garment brands we spoke to were all reasonably positive in their analysis and expectations regarding potential supply issues out of the Far East. By the time the magazine went to press, we were already receiving reports of outbreaks of Covid-19 in Italy and we were in contact with Fespa to see whether its 2020 expo in Madrid would go ahead. By the time the magazine started landing with readers the number of people in the UK who had been diagnosed as suffering with the virus was in double figures, one Briton had died and the UK government had convened a Cobra meeting to plan for what was becoming a rapidly escalating pandemic. By the time we published our digital edition, Fespa had taken the decision to postpone its 2020 expo (followed by Drupa, Sign & Digital, and the regional roadshows) and reports of some decorators running out of supplies of suitable print media were filtering in. The rest is history and the immediate future is pretty much unknowable at this point. Firstly, our thoughts go out to any readers, their family members and friends who have fallen ill with the virus – we wish you a full and speedy recovery. We’re also very aware that many businesses in our industry – large and small – are anxious and feeling under threat. There’s no getting away from the fact that the current situation will have a significant impact on the industry, in the short term at the very least. What is equally certain is that we will do our level best to keep you updated with industry news and business advice throughout this period so that you’re ready to get your businesses back on-track and up to full speed as quickly as possible once we all come out the other side. We’ve been posting regular updates and advice relating to the epidemic on the Images website for weeks now and we’ll continue to do so. We’re reaching out to a wide range of experienced and knowledgeable sources across a broad range of sectors and disciplines to compile as much useful information and curate as many relevant and useful support materials as possible. We’d also like you to share with us your most pressing questions and we’ll do our upmost to help you find the answers; and also to tell us what you want to read about at this time and we’ll get working on it. Our job, as always, is to support our readers – every one of you – in running your businesses successfully, whatever the circumstances. We may be a relatively young industry, but we’ve ridden out tough times in the past and emerged stronger and more dynamic than ever; this current situation may be unprecedented and is undoubtedly the toughest yet, but we will get through it.
